Whispers of the Night

In the quiet house where my story unfolds, as darkness settled, the mysterious sounds began in the evening. My family home is adjacent to a decades-old haunted house. The family had all gone to bed, and my sisters and I found ourselves alone, grappling with the unexplained sounds.

We were not spared from the strange movements, footsteps, and eerie noises in the middle of the night, leaving us to question the origin of the haunting sounds. We used to tell our mother everything we heard, but she never believed us.

One night, as time slipped away and darkness blanketed everything, a strange sound echoed through the silence, resembling heavy footsteps. Each step carried a weight, as the sound of someone descending the stairs in that house started. It was like a giant elephant heading straight for our room, walking down the stairs so loud.

Fear gripped us, but I summoned the courage to close the door, shaking with terror. Suddenly, the sound changed, moving away to the lower floor, and then it just disappeared into the dark.
What was that terrifying sound? I'm still left wondering, with no explanation in sight.
